Black Myth: Wukong – Challenges Explained(Boss Rush Mode)
The Black Myth: Wukong update 1.0.12.16581 introduced a new Challenge feature available at Keeper Shrines throughout the game. This addition unlocks two fresh gameplay modes: Return of Rivals and Gauntlet of Legends, both offering unique rematch experiences against familiar bosses.
In Return of Rivals, players can revisit any boss they’ve previously defeated in the main storyline. This mode provides a chance to refine tactics and experiment with new strategies. But why revisit old adversaries? That’s where Gauntlet of Legends comes into play. In this mode, players face consecutive boss battles, ranging from 3 to 6 encounters in a single run, with the promise of earning valuable new rewards.
How Return of Rivals Works in Black Myth: Wukong
Return of Rivals is the most straightforward of the new modes, allowing players to select any boss they have previously encountered in the main game and challenge them again. Naturally, this is limited to bosses you’ve already faced, so if you missed an encounter, such as with the Scorpionlord, it won’t be available in this mode. However, in New Game Plus, you’ll retain access to all bosses defeated in earlier playthroughs. This means you can start New Game Plus by revisiting familiar foes, such as warming up against Erlang Shen, if you choose.
All Gauntlet of Legends Challenges in Black Myth: Wukong
Three Tigers | “Tiger Vanguard”, Mad Tiger, and Tiger Vanguard | Completing this challenge earns you the Stone Tiger Tally and three Soul Remigration Pills. The Stone Tiger Tally gives you a small and short-lived critical hit chance buff whenever you see through an enemy attack. This buff can stack up to 6 times. |
Four Monks | Non-Pure, Non-Void, Non-Able, and Non-White. | Clearing this challenge earns you the Frost-Enduring Chrysanth, a soak that restores a moderate amount of Qi whenever you take a sip with low mana. |
Four Loongs of Four Waters | Red Loong, Black Loong, Cyan Loong, and Yellow Loong. | Getting through this challenge earns you four Glimmering Scale Pellets and the Formula for making more of them. These pellets increase the damage you deal with any scale-made staff for a long while. |
The Valiant Six | Quick as Fire, Fast as Wind, Cloudy Mist, Misty Cloud, and Top Takes Bottom, Bottom Takes Top. | Beating this challenge gets you three Soul Remigration Pills and the Ever-Burning Palace Lantern. The lantern allows your light attacks to inflict scorch damage whenever you’re standing in Lava Terrain or inside the Ring of Fire spell. |
Shadowy Assembly | Centipede Guai, Baw-Li-Guhh-Baw, Beetle Commander, Violet Spider, The Scorpionlord, and Emerald-Armed Mantis. | Completing this challenge gets you the Darkened Eye, Kun Steel, and Sour Wine. The Darkened Eye is needed to craft the Leeching Centipede Staff, while Kun Steel is a crafting material used in both the Leeching Centipede and Golden Loong Staves. Sour Wine is a drink that restores 24% of your maximum health per sip and temporarily increases the stamina cost of all actions, but also temporarily increases the damage dealt by heavy attacks and varied combos. |
Collective Strength | Wandering Wight, Tiger Vanguard, Non-Able, Yin Tiger, The Scorpionlord, and Yellow Loong. | Beating this brutal challenge earns you Radiating Cosmo, Kun Steel, and Robust Antler. The former two are used for weapon crafting/upgrading, while the latter is a soak that boosts attack power for a while if you take a sip when you’re entirely out of mana. |
Monkey Mind | Stone Monkey and The Great Sage’s Broken Shell | Clearing this refight earns you three Soul Remigration Pills and the Fragment of the Ocean-Settling Pillar. This new Curio extends the duration of the Great Sage Form, allowing you to utilize Wukong’s signature fighting style for 120 seconds at a time instead of 60, assuming you’ve unlocked it. |
Brothers of Mei | Whiteclad Noble, Yellow-Robed Squire, Green-Capped Martialist, Venom Daoist, Pale-Axe Stalwart and Erlang, the Sacred Divinity | Clearing this challenge earns you the Three-Hill Crown and two Celestial Ribbons. The Three-Hill Crown is a new piece of headgear that enhances light attack combos when using the Tri-Point Double-Edged Spear. |
Relic Holders | Black Bear Guai, Yellow Wind Sage, Yellowbrow, Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master, Yaksha King and Erlang Shen | Finishing off this final challenge (which only unlocks when the other eight are beaten) will earn you “Heart at Ease” and two Kun Steel. At the time of writing I’ve been unable to determine what Heart at Ease does (these fights are really tough.) |
